Wordy Wednesday: The Creep Goes Viral

(So sorry for the long hiatus! We are back up and operating.)

Saturday Night Live‘s Digital Shorts have been one of the shows few saving graces in recent years, and it seems like any time the feature is a music video, it goes viral immediately. SNL castmember Andy Samberg and SNL writers Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone make up the comedy group The Lonely Island that produce the Digital Shorts. Their latest video, “The Creep” featuring Nicki Minaj, has done it again, racking up almost a million views in just one day. Check it out after the break.

The video was featured on this weekend’s episode, where Facebook co-founder (and subject of The Social Network) Mark Zuckerberg also made an appearance.

Wordy Wednesday: Andy Samberg and Zachary Quinto to Play Exes to Anna Faris

Andy Samberg has signed on to play one of Faris's past loves, and Zachary Quinto is also in talks. Since the main character's exes in Karyn Bosnak’s book 20 Times a Lady (on which the film is based) are described as "an inmate, a rehab patient, a dog-obsessed Amway salesman and a Muppeteer", I'm psyched to see both of these guys step into such kooky parts. Can't you just picture Samberg as a Muppeteer?! Hilarious. Also, it'll be nice to watch Quinto's funny side — which we didn't exactly get to see behind those pointy ears in Star Trek. What do you make of Quinto doing comedy? And are you happy to see Samberg on the big screen again?

Wordy Wednesday: Andy Samberg starting yearning for 'SNL' at about age 8

Sorry for the lack of posts lately - I'll try to keep this blog updated better! :)

Andy Samberg said he was sneaking to watch late-night professional wrestling as a kid when he discovered "Saturday Night Live."

"I kind of found it by accident ... and just became obsessed with it," he said.

Samberg, a cast member on the show for the past five years, spoke Tuesday at the University of Florida's O'Connell Center to a crowd of about 5,000. He is best known for musical parodies on "SNL" including "Lazy Sunday," "I'm on a Boat" and a couple with names unprintable in a newspaper, a few of which were shown during the event.

"Stupid and weird -- I would say those easily describe what I do," he said.

Samberg said he wanted to be on "SNL" since the age of 8. His devotion to comedy could be frustrating to teachers, he said, although they might take a different view today.

"Then they'd probably say 'Just shut up, just shut up, just stop talking,'" he said. "Now they'd say, 'We had a special connection.'"

Mike Foley, a master lecturer in journalism at UF, interviewed Samberg for the event. Foley asked a variety of random questions, some suggested by his students. Most were met by smart-aleck answers.

What would Samberg do if he was a woman for a day?

"I'd probably try to have a baby," he said.

What's next with singer Justin Timberlake, his song-parody collaborator?

"Marriage."

Who would he want in the next bed if he was in the hospital?

"A doctor."

Samberg was paid $72,000 for the event and, as part of the contract, no photographs or video recordings were allowed. The ACCENT student-run speakers bureau sponsored the event as part of Jewish Awareness Month, a distinction that led Samberg to rate his placement on the Jewish scale.

"On a scale of like Hitler to Moses ... I'd say probably somewhere between Larry David and Steven Spielberg," he said.

Wordy Wednesday: Grammy Nomination for Andy

It's almost Christmas, and for many people, that means trying to figure out what kind of gift to get for that guy who has everything. This year, though, when noted gift consultant Andy Samberg looks into his own box, he may find something truly unexpected: a Grammy award.

Yes, that's right: the 'Saturday Night Live' star, who famously won an Emmy award for his musical collaboration with Justin Timerblake back in 2007, will have to break out his tux once again, as he and new collaborator T-Pain have been nominated for a Grammy Award for their duet 'I'm On a Boat.'

And this time it's not in a television category either: PopEater is reporting that Samberg (along with Lonely Island partners Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer) and T-Pain are up for the award in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Their competition includes, among others, three different Kanye West projects, which begs the question: if Kanye was upset about Taylor Swift, what kind of speech is he going to give if the creative genius behind 'Motherlover' beats him out?

January Jones, Painful on SNL: Visibly, Audibly Asks “Which Camera?”

Poor January Jones. It has, I think, been a long time since a host on SNL has been this bad. Stilted delivery, stumbling over words and that weird, low-energy negativity that works for Betty Draper but so does not work for a live comedy show. There were many lowlights, but the NYT’s Dave Itzkoff caught one of the most glaringly bad: Visibly and audibly asking “Which camera?” in her first live sketch. We’ve got the painful moment here:

This is not the only reason that last night’s show was one of the worst in recent memory, and it’s not like there weren’t good moments — the Joe Biden cold open, Darrell Hammond spoofing Lou Dobbs, Jones spoofing archaic Mad Men values in a “Ladies Guide To Party Planning” video, Bill Hader’s take on Dr. Jekyll and what Mr. Hyde really did — but the tone is set in the monologue and that isn’t just about the host, it’s about what the writers elect to do with that host. Making the monologue about spoofing Mad Men — and making it all about the guys in the audience — was a lazy way to use her, especially since SNL did Mad Men so well last year when Jon Hamm hosted. Repeating the Joanie joke (Joanie’s hot; has a voluptuous, swaying butt) was even worse, and a wasted opportunity for a reveal — after the production that was made of watching Joanie mount the stage from behind, I was expecting to see Andy Samberg’s face when she turned around (which would have salvaged somewhat). Alas, it was Abby Elliott, in the same costume as Casey Wilson from last year. Lame.

It’s hard not to compare Jones with Hamm — he was awesome, funny, natural, she was…not — but compare for a moment the material they were given. Hamm shone just as well in roles outside his Don Draper persona (”Jon Hamm’s John Hamm“; umm this one); even the Mad Men parody wasn’t just a parody, but had the clever A-Holes twist. Jones’ Betty Draper was well-used in the “Ladies Guide”) but everywhere else she was a pretty prop. She was clearly willing to take risks — the “Rear Window” sketch showed that, and did so well, if ickily (yes I laughed, what can I say, it’s the payoff of well-done bathroom humor. Didn’t feel the same about the digital short). Where was Jones dressed up a la Lady Gaga on “Deep House Dish?” Where was she made up to do any sort of impression? Half the joke of Taylor Swift as Kate Gosselin was the hair. Where was Jones playing someone from the news? (She actually has just the right energy to have played crazy Michele Bachmann.) Or she could have been Hermione, trying to get Harry and Ron to hurry and fight Voldemort while they giggle and eat Cheetos after smoking pot. Alas, the most innovative, out of the box depictions of Jones on SNL last night occurred in the commercial-break portraits. Those hinted at promise no one bothered to uncover.

Jones didn’t serve SNL very well last night, but they didn’t serve her, either. A host takes a huge risk when they come on — essentially the risk of falling flat like January Jones. Even seeing that she’s awkward onstage, nervously reliant on cue cards — so what, she wouldn’t be the first. It was up to them to help her there. Making it worthwhile for her to have been on the show would it have made it worthwhile for them to have had her.

Anyway! If after all that you still want to see last night’s show, well, here you go: Monologue; The Awkward Return of A Different Hoda; Rear Window, filled with puns and smells; Lou Dobbs and Kim Kardashian; and Kristen Wiig chewing up scenery like no ones’ business coming up if only you click here.

Wordy Wednesday: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

The forecast for the animated feature Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs could very well be sunny with a chance of a big hit.

Based on the children's book of the same name about a town where food falls like rain, writer-directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord took the basic premise and brilliantly crafted an origin-type story. The result is an intricate, colorful and delicious world that is strong on character, big on laughs and clever on plot.

In Cloudy, aspiring inventor Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) creates a machine that makes it rain whatever foods he programs in to his computer. National Weather Network's Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) arrives to cover the phenomenon and the two become friends. Over time, the townsfolk begin to abuse the machine with requests that get grander by the day and the machine starts to behave erratically.

Hitting a boiling point, the machine unleashes a torrent of spaghetti tornadoes, giant meatballs and other foods in grotesque sizes that threaten to destroy the town. As everyone prepares to evacuate, Flint and Sam must try to stop the looming disaster. It's a fast-paced adventure with nary a dull moment, making the hour and half go by quickly.

In addition to the clever story-line, the characters in Cloudy prove to be a great strength here as well. All of them -- no matter how small or large the part -- are interesting, engaging and unique in their personalities. Flynt's technophobic and reserved father (James Caan), the gluttonous Mayor Shelbourne (Bruce Campbell), the town's local celebrity "Baby" Brent (Andy Samberg) and the over protective sheriff (Mr. T) are just a few of the folks who have their own personal story arcs in the film. Each one is neatly tied together by the end.

The world crafted by the filmmakers is both mesmerizing and scrumptious. Swimming pools of melted cheese, a giant Jell-O bouncy-house and peanut brittle as weapon-like stakes are nothing short of impressive. It brings to mind the type of richness and inventiveness Tim Burton brought to his version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, except this world is animated.
It's clear that much love and effort went in to bringing this book to life. Lord and Miller, along with digital effects supervisor Daniel Kramer, spent a lot of time replicating falling foods by studying their effects in real life before animating them. Their team filled a bathtub with Jello-O, for example, and dropped action figures into it to see how it would bounce and reflect light. Burgers were dropped from great heights and the different ways it would come apart upon landing was duly noted and incorporated.

This attention to detail results in the audiences' total acceptance of a world where anything goes, no matter how wacky things gets. (A monkey who speaks through a thought translator? Check. A flock of rat-birds? Check.)

First time feature directors Lord and Miller hail from the world of television, having served as co-executive producers on How I Met Your Mother among other credits. The duo makes a loud and splashy arrival with Cloudy, signaling a personal forecast that should be nothing but clear skies and sunshine.
